XCOM: Enemy Unknown (downloaded from Steam) does not work past the game select screen

Would love some help.

The game launches, but only goes up to the game select screen. Then when I click Enemy Unknown' is promptly crashes after flashing a tiny window so fast I can't tell what it is.

How do I debug this?

So far I got one error sorted by installing libsdl2.

I'm on Ubuntu 18.04
