SD storage class controller error (code 10) on Windows 10 but not windows 7

We have a unit that has a VUB300 SD card reader IC designed in to allow the offload of data from an SD card over USB. When connected to a windows 7 PC, the card reader works fine and I can read / write the data. When I connect the same unit to a windows 10 machine I get an "SD storage class controller" error which suggests the problem is "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". I also have a built in SD card reader on my windows 10 machine that is able to read the SD card without any problems (although it doesn't appear in device manager as the same controller).

The driver that comes with the VUB300 is labelled as "SDA Standard Compiant SDIO Host Controller" and I have access to the source code for this. This displays no errors in device manager - I assume that the way windows 7 and windows 10 interact with this sd storage controller is different but I am not sure how to debug and ultimately fix the driver problem.

Any advise or alternative driver selections from anyone that has managed to solve this in the past would be greatly appreciated.
